Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said it was “important” his side “don’t overreact” after Saturday’s disappointing 4-1 home defeat to Bournemouth.
The Magpies were hoping to set a new club record of 10 consecutive wins in all competitions, but struggled to maintain the form which had seen them seen as outside title contenders against Howe’s former side.
“I give credit to Bournemouth, I think they played very well,” Howe said after the match. “They were better than us.
“I think from our point of view we looked tired, we looked tired. The midweek game took a lot of work from us.
“From the first minute we didn’t look at each other. Our usual dynamism, bounce and intensity wasn’t there and we struggled to live with them. It was a frustrating watch for everyone involved We set very high standards, but we fell far short of that.
Newcastle remain fifth – level on points with champions Manchester City in fourth – and Howe believes his side should not become discouraged after their fine run ended.
“It can happen at this level against any team,” he added.
“Bournemouth have their way of playing and they are very difficult to play against and they can make you lose your rhythm. We had no answers to that question.
“It’s important not to overreact. It’s a game. The players have been magnificent in recent weeks. We have to accept it, learn from it, analyze where we could improve and come back next week .”
